evaluation

Evaluation Question 3.

Question 3. Evaluation - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

what they liked -

The first bit of feedback we received from our audience was about our black and white effects in our video, as we had varied parts of our video in black and white and other parts in colour. This showed our main actor in two roles; a younger version in black and white, and the present version in color.

We also gained positive feedback about our variety of camera shots and angles we had of our main artist figure. The variety of camera shots and angles varied from close-ups, mid-shots, long-shots, wide shots and others.

Our audience also liked how we directed our main figure in our video to have excellent lip syncing skills, in order for him to mime to the lyrics of our chosen song. However, in some parts of the video we show the expression on the characters face as well as showing him miming to the song, as the video will seem too repetitive of showing mimed lyrics throughout.
Another positive point we received as a group, was that our audience liked how we balanced between the narrative and the performance in our video. Also to how we have interpreted Goodwin, when we decided to relate our lyrics to our video.

improvisation from teacher and classmates -

Once the audience had given us the first bit of feedback about what they liked about our video, we now had to  ask them if there were any ways we could improve our video. The first point they begun with was that we could have varied costume and clothing with our actor to show more realism.

Another constructive criticism point from our audience was to have more lip-synched footage added to the video, as it would show a sense of continuity. However, we wanted show some lip-synched footage as well as location and scenery shots.

We were also told that our performance and directors' directions were poor towards the narrative and lyrics in the song.

We were impressed as one classmate said "there are no improvements needed."

From our feedback from both classmates and teacher, this made us re-think about our video to see if improving it in the slightest would be essential or not.

We also learnt that the distinction between the two sides of the character are very clear, as the black and white scenes are shown to be from the past and this is indicated clearly whereas, the scenes with the character in color and wearing his own clothes are from the present and show him reflecting on his past. A way to show this was by having the character lip synch the lyrics.

Another point we learnt was that the clothing of the character was a good choice as the uniform was used well to show his past as well as the black and white effect. Whereas, the character in his own clothes and in color was also used well to show the present time of the character.

Additions to our music video

In our group, we decided that we needed to use a photograph in one of our scenes to relate to the lyrics of the song. For example, we used this photo showing the main artist figure with his two brothers. This relates to the part of the song where the artist speaks about having "two older brothers; one hood, one good." The photo is used well as it shows the main character engaging in contact with his good brother, as well as showing the bad brother in the photograph looking in another direction to the others and dressed thug-like.
In the music video, we filmed the shot as the main character reflecting back on his past, and remembering his childhood life with his brothers and the rest of his family. We showed this scene as the main artist figure looking at the photo on his phone with the camera looking above the shoulder of the character.
